Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water

  • 1 cup milk (whole, skim, or any plant-based milk)

  • 2 tablespoons loose black tea or 2 black tea bags

  • 2-3 tablespoons sugar or sweetener of choice (adjust to taste)

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 4-5 green cardamom pods

  • 4-5 whole cloves

  • 1-2 slices of fresh ginger

  • 4-5 black peppercorns

  • Optional: a pinch of ground nutmeg or star anise for extra flavour

Instructions:

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the water with the cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, cloves, ginger slices, and black peppercorns. Bring to a boil over medium heat.

  2. Reduce the heat and let the spices simmer for about 5 minutes to release their flavours fully.

  3. Add the loose black tea or tea bags to the spiced water and let it steep for 2-3 minutes.

  4. Pour in the milk and bring the mixture back to a boil.

  5. Add the sugar or sweetener and stir until fully dissolved. Adjust the sweetness to your taste.

  6. Reduce the heat and let the tea simmer for another 2 minutes.

  7. Strain the tea into cups to remove the spices and tea leaves.

  8. Serve hot and enjoy your homemade Masala Chai!
